Programme Structure and Development
Tradition and International Recognition
The English track has been running since 1992 and is accredited both nationally and by the Medical Board of California, supporting graduates’ access to professional opportunities in the United States and beyond.
Learning Environment
Your studies take place across both theoretical departments at the Plzeňská Campus and clinical departments at Motol and Homolka University Hospital, complemented by internships in other healthcare facilities in the Czech Republic and abroad. This structure exposes you to different medical settings and approaches within a large, well-established university hospital, where numerous specialists support your training and the environment promotes focus and professional well-being.
Foundations of Medical Knowledge (Years 1–3)
From the outset, your studies combine knowledge acquisition with practical experience and contact with patients. In the first three years, you build a coherent understanding of the human body (through subjects such as Cell and Anatomy) and disease processes (Pathology, Pathophysiology, or Immunology), forming a shared foundation for further study.
Clinical Skills and Professional Development
Alongside this, you acquire basic clinical skills and gain experience in communicating with patients, as part of your gradual development as a future physician. Through courses in Nursing, you develop both technical skills and the ability to communicate with patients and their families with empathy and clarity. You also gain awareness of the psychological dimensions of care – for both patients and healthcare professionals. You continue to build these skills during internships and in a GP’s office, as well as through team-based learning in clinical environments.
Scientific Thinking and Evidence-Based Medicine
Bioethics and Psychology provide the framework for navigating ethical and psychological dilemmas in patient care, while Biostatistics and Methodology of Science help you work with data and contemporary sources of medical knowledge. In the course of Epidemiology and EBM (evidence-based medicine), you develop an understanding of its role as a key framework for contemporary clinical decision-making. Overall, this phase supports the development of a solid professional foundation together with gradual independence in thinking and learning.
Clinical Practice and Application (Years 4–6)
Years 4 to 6 shift entirely to the hospital ward. Through block-based rotations, you will manage real patient cases within clinical teams and utilize modern medical simulation. Clinical experience increasingly reflects current developments in medicine, including the use of digital tools and approaches tailored to individual patients.
Individual Focus and Responsibility
The curriculum builds in flexibility: optional subjects and tailored internships allow you to pursue specific medical fields that match your career goals. This includes optional internship components in the later years of study, such as an extended internship in the sixth year. Supervised clinical work further strengthens your ability to act in complex situations and take responsibility within a clinical setting.
Preparation for Professional Practice
This final period integrates your knowledge across core medical disciplines. You will refine your clinical reasoning and independent decision-making, while leaving room for elective clinical tracks.
Graduation and Career Opportunities
You complete your studies with Advanced Master’s state examinations in Public Health, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Gynecology and Obstetrics, and Paediatrics. You will graduate equipped with the essential clinical reasoning and practical skills needed to become a reliable member of any healthcare team. This solid launchpad gives you the confidence to enter your future specialisation and further professional growth. Graduates are awarded the degree ‘Doctor of General Medicine’ (MUDr./MD), opening global opportunities in clinical residency programmes, research, and healthcare leadership.
