Clinical and Teaching Bases
Motol
Our faculty is located on the premises of Motol University Hospital and Homolka Hospital, where most of the clinical teaching takes place in the children's and adult departments. The affiliation with one of the largest and most modern hospitals in Europe allows our faculty to offer comprehensive education in all fields of medicine, enriched with knowledge of specialised paediatric medicine. With more than 72,000 patients per year and 2,410 beds, including 667 for children, the facilities provide medical students with the opportunity to encounter a wide range of patients and diagnoses.
Bulovka and the Military University Hospital
Some clinical teaching also takes place at Na Bulovka Hospital and at the Military University Hospital.
Plzeňská Campus
Teaching of theoretical and preclinical subjects mainly takes place at Plzeňská Campus on Plzeňská Street in Motol. The Department of Anatomy and its dissection rooms, completed in 2019, are among the newest in the Czech Republic.
Paediatric Medicine
Teaching at the Second Faculty of Medicine places emphasis on the developmental aspects of human life in health and disease, from the prenatal period to old age. Instruction in all disciplines is expanded to include paediatric issues.
Undergraduate Studies
We offer
- a long-cycle Master's programme in General Medicine (MUDr. / MD), taught in both Czech and English
- Bachelor's programmes in Physiotherapy, General Nursing, Paediatric Nursing, and Radiologic Assistance
- a post-Bachelor Master's programme in Applied Physiotherapy
In terms of undergraduate student numbers, we are one of the smaller faculties, which gives us an almost family-like atmosphere with a student-to-teacher ratio of about 4:1.
Science and Research
Internationally recognised medically oriented research is among the faculty's priorities. Independent assessments over a number of years have named us one of the best medical faculties in the country.
Postgraduate Studies
The scientific potential of the faculty rests significantly on PhD students. Within the framework of doctoral study programmes in biomedicine, whose graduates obtain the degree of PhD, students can choose from many high-quality projects and top, internationally respected experts as supervisors.
History
The Second Faculty of Medicine has been part of Charles University since its founding in 1348. In 1953, three faculties were established in Prague from the original single faculty, including the Faculty of Paediatric Medicine. Since 1990 it has been called the Second Faculty of Medicine.
