Departmental Focus
The Department of Infectious Diseases at the Second Faculty of Medicine, Charles University and Bulovka University Hospital forms an integral part of the wider complex of Infectious Disease Departments affiliated with the First, Second, and Third Medical Faculties and Bulovka University Hospital. The overlapping nature of the care provided creates a unified workplace that dynamically responds to epidemiological challenges.
Undergraduate teaching for all three Prague medical faculties takes place here, alongside postgraduate training not only in infectious diseases but also across a broad range of internal medicine disciplines, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of care for patients with infections and their antibiotic treatment.
This compact complex of three infectious disease clinics constitutes the largest facility of its kind in the Czech Republic. It provides super-consiliary care for patients of all age groups—from infants to the elderly—including those with transmissible diseases and even childbirth in infectious contexts. The intensive care and intermediate care units, together with the capacity to activate a high-contagion isolation ward, serve patients whose vital functions are critically compromised.
Historically, our clinic has specialised in paediatric infectious care. Today, it remains one of the few facilities in the Czech Republic with a dedicated paediatric infectious disease ward, including an isolation unit for varicella. The adult department focuses—according to the expertise of our specialists—on neuroinfections, severe bacterial infections, respiratory infections, and travel-related health issues.
In line with the growing trend of shifting care to outpatient settings, the clinic offers follow-up and consiliary services for a wide spectrum of infectious conditions, including a consiliary centre for congenital infections and infections during pregnancy, as well as a vaccination centre.
The patient spectrum at the infectious disease clinic is highly dynamic, reflecting the current epidemiological situation. Students have access to patients across all three clinics, allowing exposure to the full range of infectious diseases. We engage with students not only during compulsory infectious disease placements but also through elective modules, individual practical internships, and summer placements in both paediatric and adult care. We also provide tailored preparation for students undertaking humanitarian missions, including vaccination counselling.
