Basic Framework and Calendar

  • Degree Programme: General Medicine (Master’s, 6-year full-time study in English).
  • Standard vs. Maximum Duration: Standard study time is 6 years. The maximum allowed time to complete your degree is 10 academic years.
  • Study Year vs. Academic Year: A Study Year refers to your curriculum level (1st–6th year). An Academic Year refers to the calendar school year (e.g., 2026/2027).
  • Learning vs. Calendar Weeks: Pay attention to week numbering! A semester alternates between odd and even Learning Weeks, which may not match standard calendar weeks.

 

Rules, Attendance and Ethics

  • Firm Rules: Rules for each subject are announced at the start of the academic year in the Student Information System (SIS). They are binding for everyone and cannot be changed mid-year.
  • Attendance: Full attendance at all classes (including optional subjects) is strongly recommended.
  • Absences: Check allowed absence limits in SIS for each subject. If you must miss a class, always notify your teacher in advance to arrange make-up work.
  • Introductory Lessons: Never miss the first lecture of a subject — key course requirements and schedules are presented here.
  • Ethics & Confidentiality: Professional and ethical behavior is required at all times. Strictly NO photos or videos of patients or cadavers are allowed under any circumstances.

 

Credit System (ECTS)

Our study plan fully aligns with the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).

Rules for Optional Subjects

  • Recommended timing: Earn your 18 optional credits mainly during your 4th and 5th study years.
  • Yearly Limit: You can count a maximum of 3 optional subjects (9 credits total) toward one academic year.
  • Important: You cannot replace 9 credits of compulsory subjects with 9 credits of optional subjects.
  • Changes: To add or drop an optional subject after the deadline, contact your Study Coordinator.

 

Passing Subjects & Exam Rules

Subjects are completed with a Credit (zápočet), an Exam (zkouška), or Both.

  • 3 Attempts: You have a maximum of 3 exam attempts per subject (1 regular + 2 retakes). No additional attempts are granted.
  • Registration: Sign up for exam dates in SIS early — capacity per date can be limited, especially toward the end of the academic year (September).
  • Unexcused Absence: Missing a registered exam date without an approved excuse results in a forfeited attempt.
  • Annual Deadline: All credits and exams for the current academic year must be completed by mid-September (see the Academic Calendar for the exact date). No exceptions or deadline extensions are granted after this date.

 

Progression & Minimum Credit Requirements

To advance to the next study year, you must earn the required cumulative minimum of ECTS credits by the September deadline:

  • If you earn fewer than 38 credits in your 1st year, or fail to reach the minimum threshold for subsequent years without an approved ISP, you will be expelled from studies.

 

Individual Study Plan (ISP)

If you fail a compulsory subject or face severe health issues, you may be eligible to study under an Individual Study Plan (ISP).

1. ISP Due to a Failed Compulsory Subject

If you fail a compulsory subject (e.g., Anatomy, Histology & Embryology - AHE) but earn at least 38 credits in your 1st year:

  • You cannot advance as a regular student due to subject prerequisites (e.g., AHE is a prerequisite for 2nd-year Physiology and Microbiology I).
  • You must apply to spread one study year across two academic years (ISP).
  • Tuition: You must pay the full annual tuition fee for each academic year of your ISP.
  • Repeating the Subject: You get one final attempt to pass the failed subject during the first year of your ISP. If you fail again, you will be expelled.
  • No Consecutive Minimums: You cannot advance with only the minimum number of credits two study years in a row. To leave ISP status, you must achieve the full cumulative credit amount (e.g., 120 credits by the end of Year 2 ISP).

2. ISP Due to Health Reasons

  • Requires an official application supported by a medical certificate.
  • Spreads your study obligations for one year over two academic years.
  • Completed credits and passed exam attempts carry over — you do not restart subjects or get 3 new exam attempts.
  • Tuition is paid for both academic years.

The organizational rules for studies at the Second Faculty of Medicine are fully compatible with the European Credit Transfer System.

The most important rules of the system are:

  1. Successful completion of each subject gives the student a certain number of credits. To advance to the next stage of studies, a student is supposed to collect 60 credits every academic year. However, he or she could also advance with a lower number of credits where the minimum number of credits stipulated is equal to or higher than
  • 38 credits for progressing to the second year
  • 101 credits for progressing to the third
  • 168 credits for progressing to the fourth
  • 230 credits for progressing to the fifth
  • 290 credits for progressing to the sixth
  • 360 credits for progressing to (each subsequent year)

Those credits missing after such advancement must be gained during a specified stage of the study. Progress into the next stage of study based on the required minimum number of credits is not possible in consecutive years.

  1. In the case of advancement with the minimum number of credits, students can repeat a subject, which will be identified as compulsory in the relevant study plan. This repetition of a subject is possible only once, and only in consecutive stages of study.
  2. Those who fail to obtain the minimum number of credits owing to extreme circumstances (illness etc.) can apply for an individual study plan. However, this can occur only if they did not use all three exam attempts. Requests for an individual study plan in the case of a repeat attempt of a compulsory subject can be allowed twice only during the entire study programme.
  3. Enlisting for a subject is possible only if all its prerequisites are fulfilled. Prerequisites are subjects that have to be successfully completed in previous stages of studies. Information on prerequisites can be found in the details of each subject in SIS.

Example: The failure of a first-year student to pass Anatomy and Histology and Embryology I usually results in the termination of her/his studies. However, she/he is given the chance to continue on an individual study plan. A student who failed at Histology and Embryology I only would advance to the second year with the minimum number of credits. She/he would repeat Histology and Embryology I but would not be allowed to enroll on Histology and Embryology II and Medical Biology II (as Histology and Embryology I is a prerequisite for this subject) and therefore would need an individual study plan to gain all 120 credits by the end of the second year.
