Year 2: Nursing (SIS)

Year 3: Nursing (SIS)

Year 4: Summer Internship I

The summer internship after Year 4 builds on the knowledge gained in Year 4 subjects. The student chooses an internship in one of the completed clinical subjects that normally have inpatient departments.

The internship may be completed in full, i.e. 4 weeks, at one department, or it may be split into 2 weeks at one department and 2 weeks at another.

Information common to all fields

Internships in all fields always take place at an inpatient department of the chosen field with an outpatient component. The internship includes observing the doctor's work during patient admission, examination, keeping medical records, proposing treatment, ordering examinations, discharge and writing the discharge report, attending grand rounds and doctors' morning meetings, differential diagnostic considerations of patients' results and proposing a treatment plan. The student observes the doctor's work during outpatient examinations, communication with the patient, writing the outpatient report and evaluating results.

Internal medicine fields (internal medicine, paediatrics)

During the internship, the student practises practical skills such as s.c., i.m. and i.v. administration of medication, venous and capillary  blood sampling, assisting with insertion of a peripheral venous catheter, urinary bladder catheterisation, insertion of a nasogastric tube, gastric lavage, collection of biological material for microbiological examination and recording an ECG, and is present at diagnostic and therapeutic procedures: endoscopy (GI tract), echocardiography, ergometry, sternal puncture, ascitic puncture and lumbar puncture, as well as attending X-ray rounds and departmental seminars. The student becomes familiar with the principles of administering blood and blood products. As part of the internship, the student takes part in 1 on-call duty and, depending on the department's capacity, also visits its outpatient service, where they observe the doctor communicating with the patient and their companions and carrying out administrative tasks.

The internship in paediatrics also includes training in the department of physiological newborns, physical examination and care of the newborn in the delivery room under the supervision of a neonatologist and a paediatric nurse, Apgar scoring, subsequent care of the newborn in the department of physiological newborns, the newborn's daily routine, nutrition, breastfeeding, blood sampling for screening and umbilical stump care.

Surgical fields (surgery, ophthalmology, ENT, orthopaedics and traumatology of the musculoskeletal system)

The internship completed in the Year 4 surgical fields  includes a placement in the departments of the chosen specialisation. During the internship, the student is repeatedly present at surgical procedures in the operating theatre – they become familiar with the running of operating theatres, the various surgical techniques of the field and the ways of assisting in theatre. The student assists with the surgical treatment of minor injuries, wound dressing and suture removal. The placement also includes assisting with outpatient treatment and patient monitoring, and taking part in 1 on-call duty.

Of the other fields completed in Year 4, the summer internship may only be completed in imaging methods and rehabilitation.

Imaging methods

The internship includes observing the doctor's work with individual imaging methods (ultrasound, X-ray, CT, MRI and other specialised examinations), preparing the patient for the examination, assessing the risks to the patient during the examination, performing the examination, and the processing and evaluation of results. The student also becomes familiar with the indications for individual examinations and, where applicable, the doctors' night duty.

Rehabilitation

The internship is possible only at an inpatient rehabilitation department. It includes patient admission, comprehensive examination of the musculoskeletal system, keeping medical records, proposing treatment methods, and detailed familiarisation with rehabilitation methods, their indications and specific features, including physical therapy methods.

For the internship to be recognised, a placement report must be completed on the Faculty form

The report must be confirmed by the department and include the name and signature of the responsible doctor, the head of the department or the head physician.

Year 4: Specialised Training

Within the subject Specialised Training (K10), the student has the opportunity to try shadowing a doctor. The student enrols in the subject via SIS approximately 2 weeks before it takes place, at a department of the Second Faculty of Medicine, following the Study Department's instructions. The student reserves a place at the chosen department, where a doctor will be assigned to them on arrival on the first day of teaching.

This subject can also be completed outside the Faculty's departments. However, the student must arrange such a practical placement themselves, for example at one of the hospitals with which we have a framework cooperation agreement (information can be found on the website in the "Specialised Training" section), and notify the Faculty's Study Department in advance.

For the internship to be recognised, a placement report must be completed on the form Report from practical internship within K10 / Specialised Training

The report must be confirmed by the department and include the name and signature of the responsible doctor, the head of the department or the head physician. The student submits the form to the Study Department.

The summer internship after Year 5 builds on the knowledge gained in Year 5 subjects. The student chooses an internship in one of the completed subjects with an inpatient department. The fields of Summer Internship II must differ from those of Summer Internship I.

The internship may be completed in full, i.e. 4 weeks, at one department, or it may be split into 2 weeks at one department and 2 weeks at another.

During the internship in gynaecology and obstetrics, the student also observes and, where possible, performs 20 gynaecological examinations under the supervision of a gynaecologist, observes communication with patients and, where possible, assists with abdominal surgery, possibly also vaginal surgery and minor surgical procedures. The student assists in the delivery room, performs an obstetric examination under the supervision of a gynaecologist, admits a woman in labour and cares for her, assists with at least 5 deliveries and with the postpartum care of the mother, and assists or observes the gynaecologist during a caesarean section.

The internship in infectious diseases includes detailed familiarisation with the running of the infectious diseases department and anti-epidemic measures for specific diagnoses, collection of biological material for microbiological examination, evaluation of test results and proposing rational anti-infective therapy.

The internship in neurology includes practising neurological examination in various diagnoses, the indication of and assistance with lumbar puncture, management of acute conditions (e.g. the indication and performance of a brain CT in suspected stroke, etc.), and performing EEG, EMG and other neurological examination procedures.

The internship in oncology includes familiarisation with specific treatment procedures, including radiotherapy and the principles of chemotherapy and supportive cancer treatment.

The internship in anaesthesiology and intensive care medicine includes observing the doctor's work in the inpatient Department of Anaesthesiology and Resuscitation (ARO) as well as the anaesthetist's work in the operating theatre, assisting with various types of anaesthesia, intubation and extubation, and familiarisation with the principles of monitoring critically ill patients, etc.

The internship in dermatovenereology includes work in the dermatology department as well as observing the dermatologist's work in the outpatient clinic, assisting with minor surgical procedures, working with a dermatoscope, venereological examination and sample collection.

The internship in psychiatry is possible only at an inpatient psychiatric department. In addition to the above, it includes observing the doctor's work when interviewing the patient, in differential diagnostic considerations and proposing therapy, and possibly individual or group psychotherapy together with psychologists.

The internship completed in the Year 5 surgical fields (urology, cardiac surgery) includes a placement in the departments of the chosen specialisation. During the internship, the student repeatedly takes part in surgical procedures in the operating theatre – they become familiar with the running of operating theatres, the various surgical techniques of the field and the ways of assisting in theatre. The student assists with wound dressing and suture removal. The internship in urology includes practising male and female catheterisation and ultrasound examination of the urinary tract and male genital organs, and observing the doctor during cystoscopy and sample collection.

In the case of internal medicine fields (internal medicine, paediatrics), the content of the internship is the same as after Year 4. The student may choose internal medicine or paediatrics if they did not complete them after Year 4. In addition, they may choose a placement in cardiology, where, besides the tasks described for the department and outpatient clinic, they assist with ECG, ECHO and interventional cardiology methods.

For the internship to be recognised, a placement report must be completed on the designated Faculty form, with confirmation of the internship by the relevant department, including the name and signature of the responsible doctor or, where applicable, the head of the department or the head physician of that department.
