Imaging Methods in Medicine

Characteristics of the study programme

The study covers various qualitative and quantitative methods of image analysis in biology and medicine. Research and the development of new imaging techniques and procedures, as well as the analysis, processing and interpretation of data are also emphasized, including artificial intelligence. The  programme is closely related to molecular biology, molecular imaging, radiology, nuclear medicine, pathology and many other fundamental and clinical fields of biomedicine.

Admission procedure requirement specific to the study programme

The conditions and course of the admission procedure for the part-time of study are the same as the conditions for the full-time form.

We recommend to contact your potential supervisor in advance and consult the suitable form of preparation for the interview. Each study programme has its own specifics, so the supervisor can help you to prepare for the specialized entrance examination (the interview).

Topics of dissertation thesis

The candidate chooses the preliminary topic individually and contacts a potential supervisor; candidates can also choose one of the topics listed below - the choice is not, however, limited to the offered topics.. He/she consults with him on the chosen topic and agrees on its more precise specification. In case of any ambiguity, we recommend that you also contact the chairman of the SAB. If necessary, he/she can recommend that he/she consult the topic with another specialist according to the focus of the intended project.

If the candidate does not know which topic/supervisor to choose, he/she will contact the chairman of the SAB, with whom he/she will consult on a suitable topic and a potential supervisor.

This choice is preliminary, the admissions board may, after consultation with the candidate, nominate another supervisor.

Supervisors of the study programme

Each supervisor must be approved by the SAB. The criteria for admitting new supervisors are determined by the SAB. If the proposed supervisor has not yet been approved by the SAB, this must be done no later than the enrollment of the applicant in the study (provided that the applicant is accepted). You can find a list of supervisors approved by the SAB here. After clicking, the supervisor's workplace and contact information will be displayed.

Requirements during the study

Study obligations for full-time and part-time form of study are the same.

The basic study obligation of the doctorand is his/her own research set in the ISP, approved by the SAB. The study also introduces to the student the areas that are not the subject of his/her research and the basics of the scientific work. It broadens the horizon of knowledge and helps in acquiring the practical habits. In the course of study the student must succesfully complete at least two courses, (three courses are recommended). Given the extent of the programme courses of other SABs, other doctoral programmes in biomedicine, at Czech Academy of Science departments or even at institutions abroad can also be taken (if agreed ex ante with the SAB). One course focusing on the theoretical foundations of scientific work is recommended), courses must be completed with credit.

  • Internationally recognized English examintion (FCE, TOEFL, IELTS) according to the propositions of Department of Languages, Second Faculty of Medicine CU.
  • At least two (recommended are three) publications of partial results of the research in the rewieved journals with impact factor, at least in one publication the doctorand must be the first (or corresponding) author, other publication in scientific journals.
  • Presentation of results at scientific conferences.

The study obligations, including their organisation, are specified in the ISP.

Requirements for internships

Internships are recommended if their completion is necessary to solve the research task. A foreign internship is an asset in the final evaluation, but the SAB emphasises international cooperation as a whole.

Listed courses

Requirements for the SDE

Requisites for commencement of the examination:

  • Completion of at least two courses
  • English language examination
  • Co-authorship (or first author) of at least one impacted publication
The course of SDE

During the examination the students must demonstrate detailed and up-to-date knowledge of the field of imaging methods in general as well as the topics direcly related to the topic of his/her dissertation. One examination question is always general from the topcis listed below. The recommeded literature to the SDE is specifically related to the topic of the dissertation work.

Publication activity requirements

The basic duty of a student is his/her own research according to the ISP approved by the SAB and under the supervision of the supervisor. In the course of his/her studies, he/she is also introduced to areas that are not the subject of his/her research and to the basics of scientific work in general (including one recommended course). In this way, he/she broadens his/her horizons and acquires practical habits, learns the rules of writing publications and working with scientific literature, and develops practical knowledge acquired in the course of his/her research. Participation in conferences, both domestic and international, is a requirement, and the student is expected to actively participate (with a paper or poster) in at least one domestic and one international event. It is assumed that the candidate publishes the results of research work in domestic and foreign journals - at least two original papers in a journal with IF, which are related to the topic of the dissertation and have a cumulative impact factor of at least 1.0. The student must be the first author (or corresponding author) of at least one of the publications, and at least a co-author of the other.

Defence requirements
  • Fulfillment of all the above-mentioned study obligations, including passing the SDE.
  • Publication of the results of the research work in our and foreign journals – at least two original papers in a journal with IF, which are related to the topic of the dissertation and have a cumulative impact factor of at least 1.0. The student must be the first author (or corresponding author) of at least one of the publications, and at least a co-author of the other.
  • The SAB requires 3 printed copies of the summary of the dissertation as well as 3 printouts of the dissertation.
Profile of a graduate of the study programme

Graduates can solve research, scientific and technical tasks in the interdisciplinary field of image processing and analysis in medicine or biological disciplines and have a deep understanding of their chosen research field. They understand advanced research methods in a way that enables them to expand their current level of knowledge. They are able to use their skills in the field of medical image processing and evaluation in practice. They can present their knowledge and their own findings to other professionals in the field and independently publish in scientific journals.

Information about graduate employment

Graduates are often employed in management positions at individual departments in healthcare institutions and as leaders of research teams in Czech and international scientific programmes. They have the prerequisites for further growth, including the achievement of teaching and scientific degrees. Experience from the current study programme shows that there has been and will be a great interest in graduates.
