Welcome to the new academic year 2013/2014

Dear colleagues,
Beautiful Indian summer is bringing us another beginning of an academic year. I hope you enjoyed vacations and had a rest. What can we expect this year?

As in previous years enormously high number of applicants sat for our admission tests. Once again there were more applicants than our capacity can accommodate. I believe that we managed to select those who ‘can make it’ among both Czech and international candidates.

Looking at their enthusiasm I sincerely wish that it stays with them also during the harder times of their studies.

The assignment to the elective subjects used to be a mouse-clicking race. This will change this year. The new system will take into account the preferences of each student but also the capacity of the subject, and if capacity is not sufficient, their ranking according to the study results.

A new subject K10 (clinical 10 days) for the 5th year students has already been discussed here. The purpose is to stay 10 days with a selected doctor and learn the patient care in everyday situations. This means that the student will most likely see only a small part of one department but will get a deep experience.

New building at Plzeňská will grow again. Within a year, we can start the construction of another new building, which is at the moment the only decent looking facility that belongs to our faculty.

Some improvement is needed also in the Motol University Hospital. Besides large reconstruction, which takes place mostly in the in-patient area, we hope to install a new air conditioning in the lecture halls. A small but annoying accident with a leak of rain water plumbing will hopefully get fixed soon in one of the student cloakrooms.

Our web pages that received the then-new face several years ago need to be improved again. We will prepare their new functionality and look during this autumn.

Last but not least: the traditional music events Motolfests will re-appear. The 2013 Motolfest will take place in October 11 in Dr. Voják. The Motol-based musicians (doctors, students and others) are looking forward to seeing you there.

Have a nice and successful academic year,
O. Hrušák,
Dean
