How can I participate in Erasmus+?

Our faculty sends students only to affiliated faculties, with whom we have signed a bilateral agreement.
Students are selected through an application process – candidates are named during February and the selection usually takes place in the second half of March. If you are successful, you will receive a scholarship which is considered a ‘contribution’, and thus does not have to cover all the costs you may incur during the program. The size of the ‘contribution’ determines the length of your program and country of residence. You do not pay tuition fees at the host university.

How do I apply for an Erasmus+ scholarship?

Students of the faculty's day and doctoral studies who meet the qualification criteria set by the RUK can submit an application. A commission, appointed by the Dean, decides on students' enrollment abroad. The main criteria for inclusion in the program are exceptional academic results, sufficient linguistic competence, and academic engagement and interest.

Studying abroad is an integrated part of your academic plan at your home university. This means that it cannot lead to an extension of the total length of your studies. Study abroad is usually done through the creation of an individual study plan (this, however, is not compulsory). Doctoral students are expected to use their residency abroad to elaborate on and explore further the topic of their diploma thesis.

You can participate in an exchange abroad with Erasmus+ multiple times, either as a student or as a trainee, but your total time abroad (study abroad periods included) may not exceed 12 months within one cycle of study (Bachelor, Master and doctoral).

You can prove your linguistic competence through presenting your graduation certificate (e.g. graduation from a German, French, or English secondary-school...) or an equivalent certificate, which you earn by passing a language test at the Department of Languages at our faculty (in English, German, or French). For studying in Poland, Lithuania, Finland and Norway, the knowledge of English is sufficient, but preference will be given to candidates who know the national language. Exam dates at the Language Department ​​will be posted in advance on the notice board in the Study Department and on the Faculty's website. Applications to the program should be submitted to the Office for Foreign Relations of the Second Faculty of Medicine after the application process has been opened; be sure to watch for updates on the Website and the Study Department notice board.

An application must include:

  • an application for the Erasmus+ study abroad program, which can be found here. Be sure to list Stanislava Palowska as the chief contact;
  • study plan (briefly explain which subjects will be replaced by the subjects you will take while studying abroad);
  • a concise Curriculum vitae (it is helpful to emphasize if you helped Erasmus+ students and if applicable, your practical and research work as a student, all activities listed must be accompanied by written confirmation);
  • language certificate (see above);
  • a copy of the index of your current academic year;
  • it is also necessary to submit an electronic application in the RUK Erasmus web application here.
Criteria taken into account when awarding Erasmus placements

During the application process, the Committee will assess three basic qualities of each candidate Grade average, language skills, and extra-curricular activities) according to the following tables, and can add up to 3 bonus points based on their own judgment, evaluating above all the student's motivation and their planned curriculum:

I. Grade average and Study Year (max. 20 + 4 b.)

  1. The grade average for all completed semesters of study is given in the table below.
  2. Each completed year of study is counted as one extra point.

The total grade average is calculated through the standard method, i.e. according to the Study and Examination Rules of Charles University in Prague, Article 6, Paragraph 15: ‘... In case it is necessary to determine a student's grade average, all marks from all tests and all corrective tests are included.’

II. Language skills (max. 10 pts)

  • In order to file an application, the applicant must meet the minimum point limit of 6 points (or 3 points if knowledge of a secondary language is also accepted)
  • linguistic knowledge can only be demonstrated through a language certificate.
  1. Primary language

The language in which the study abroad will take place is considered the primary language and the applicant's knowledge of such language is evaluated according to the following table, and is judged based on the applicant's submitted language certificate.

  1. Secondary Language

If the program takes place in a language that is not widely known, it is possible to substitute another language for the purposes of application – a so-called secondary language (usually one of the ‘world languages’), knowledge of which is sufficient for the application – but the applicant receives only half of the points allocated in the table.

III. Extracurricular activities (max 2 pts. / year)

Extracurricular activities are evaluated according to the table below, only on the basis of the relevant written confirmation provided by the applicant, for each year of study in which they took place. Points for individual activities count, up to a maximum of 2 points per year.

* Confirmation of extracurricular activity within student clubs will be issued to students (with at least 25 points gained for IFMSA activities within a given year) and elected coordinators of IFMSA of the Second Faculty of Medicine, the extended board of directors of Motolák, and students involved in the Buddy program.

What to do after successfully applying to the program?

Send your Application Form and your Learning Agreement to the foreign university you have been accepted to. Instructions on how to file these forms online can be found on the Charles University website here.

You will build your Curriculum from the courses listed in the syllabi of the foreign university, while also considering the number of credits to be earned. If these classes are sufficient to replace study at our faculty, the study plan is approved by the head of the relevant department or the vice-dean. The Learning Agreement (which is based on the approved curriculum) is an official contract at the faculty level which has legal status and makes you eligible for recognition of successfully completed examinations after returning to the faculty. You must pass the exams and bring with you the appropriate document – the Transcript of records.

It is always a good idea to contact colleagues who have already completed their studies, or to read reviews of completed programs published on our or the partner university's web site. You will learn important practical information, especially about local conditions, accommodation, dinning, and more. We also recommend that you find out if a student from the university that you will be studying at is studying at our faculty.

Information on studies at partner faculties is crucial for the creation of the Learning Agreement, but it is often difficult to obtain. Patiently contact the coordinator at your assigned university. Schedules can change, even after your arrival, which subsequently alters your study plan. The primary source of information on syllabi is the website of partner universities. You can find a list of links to university websites at the website of the European Office of the RUK.

Individual study plan, final state exam subjects. An overwhelming majority of students have to apply for an individual study plan in order to study abroad. It allows you to organize your studies so that you can complete all your subject requirements in time. Even while you are studying abroad, you must fulfill all of the subject requirements mandated by our faculty's curriculum. It is always necessary to inform the Study Department of all activities that go beyond your basic curriculum. This means promptly reporting exactly when you are leaving for a program, and to report your return to the hospital within a week at the latest (the Study Department has to modify your status in the Student IS so that individual clinics are able to determine if you are on a foreign program and would not be attending class with your group). It is also important to remember that if you want to visit a subject with another group, within you ISP, it is always necessary to arrange it in time with each clinic.

For the simplest recognition of the completion your curriculum requirements, it is necessary, before you depart from our faculty, to have all subjects confirmed by the guarantor of the department on the form Protocol on Studying Abroad, which you can find here, in Word format – fill it in, print it out, get each subject confirmed, and drop the document off in a folder at the Study Department.

Students who go abroad in the 6th year of study, and plan to take a part of the state exams there, must have this option approved by the head of the clinic in advance (i.e. already in the Curriculum). Count on the fact that most of the subjects will need to be completed here.

Procedure for the recognition of non-state-required and state-required  subjects

You are required to complete your studies abroad by completing the exam, and the subjects completed abroad must be recognised, under a pre-approved contract, by your home university. Non-state tested subjects will be recognised by submitting the relevant documents from your host university (Transcript of Records, Syllabus), and the study vice-dean or guarantor of the subject makes the final decision whether to recognise the subject or not. In the case of state tested courses (Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Gynecology and Obstetrics) in the 6th year, you can complete only half each subject's lectures abroad; this part of the instruction will be recognized by the Second Faculty of Medicine based on the submission of the relevant documents from your host university (Transcript of Records, Syllabus). You must complete the second half of each state tested course and complete the final exam at the Second Faculty of Medicine. You are required to take the state final exam in the Czech Republic. In disputed cases, the Dean has the final decision on any recognition of study at a foreign university.

While I am abroad, do I have to complete all subjects listed in the Learning Agreement?
  • The Learning Agreement is a legally binding agreement and the study commitments you have set out in it must, in principle, be met. You undertake to do so when signing the Participant Agreement prior to your departure on Erasmus, on the basis of which you are provided with a special scholarship.
  • While studying abroad, you are a regular student of a foreign university with the same responsibilities as local students, including the successful completion of all required examinations.
  • The Learning Agreement can only be changed on the basis of a rational explanation, submitted through a Change of Subjects form. However, the change must be approved by both sides – primarily the foreign university.
  • If you are not able to meet certain study obligations abroad, you can solve this issue individually after returning with your Vice-dean for study. It is necessary to provide the syllabus of the relevant subject and written confirmation of the foreign guarantor of the branch of study, with exact descriptions of the parts of the subject you studied and the extent to which you have completed the course (in the number of hours) in the form of a Certificate of Attendance.
Follow-up after completion of the Erasmus+ program

For the recognition of subjects studied abroad, the Study Department of the faculty requires submission of the syllabi of any subjects you would like recognized by the faculty. It is not required that the guarantor of the respective branch at our faculty recognizes the subject you passed abroad. The syllabus will be stored in your student file if any further review of the study content happens in the future.

At the Department of Ph.D. studies and Foreign Affairs and at the Rectorate of Charles University, after returning from the study program, you must present:

  1. Transcript of records, including credits earned
  2. Confirmation of study period
  3. Report on Study Abroad – The student produces this themselves. The form for the report and further information are at http://www.cuni.cz/UK-3908.html#17

It is assumed that students returning from a study abroad program will actively provide assistance to our students who will be studying abroad in the following semesters and to students arriving from abroad, especially those students who arrive from the university they studied at. That is why we ask each student to give their contact information and to monitor the faculty website and posting on the message board at the Study Department.
