Study Course

A full-time programme is provided at Charles University in Prague, 2nd Faculty of Medicine, it takes six years and is terminated by a graduation ceremony where the graduates are awarded the degree „Doctor of General Medicine“ (in abbreviated form „MUDr.“ given before the name).

Teaching of theoretical and pre-clinical subjects (1st to 3rd years) is provided in independent Faculty departments. Teaching of clinical subjects (4th to 6th years) is run in modern facilities of the Motol University Hospital, and the instruction is organized in specialized departments and centres.

Most subjects are completed with a credit and an examination. At the end of the study, the student takes the state „rigorous“ examinations in internal medicine, public health, paediatrics, surgery, gynaecology and obstetrics.
During the course of studying theoretical, pre-clinical and clinical subjects, emphasis is put on using modern audio-visual and computer techniques, with special attention being paid to practical aspects of the teaching process. During the studies the student is also supposed to demonstrate his/her scientific research abilities.

The study programme also includes summer holiday training periods: nursing care (after the 2nd year of study), internal medicine and paediatrics (after the 4th year) and surgery, gynaecology and obstetrics (after 5th year). The practical training in general medicine and paediatrics are part of the block studies and are fulfilled during the academic year.

Specialisation in a particular medical subject is provided by a postgraduate study programme. However, a student of Charles University in Prague, 2nd Faculty of Medicine, has a possibility and conditions to focus on his/her fields of interest during the course of his/her undergraduate study. The general medical education can be also extended during the course of study as the student has the opportunity to take optional subjects.
