New Perspectives on Paediatric Endocrinology from All over the World

From 12 to 21 November, the second edition of out international course in Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes Education took place at the Second Faculty's Department of Paediatrics.

As the course's aim is an intensive education and training in paediatric endocrinology, it features the best genetic-based practices in the field with particular emphasis on laboratory work. With participants from all over the world, the course opened new perspectives on health care systems, diagnostic methods and therapeutic possibilities from all over the world and was beneficial to both participants and lecturers. Professor Jan Lebl, the main organiser and a lecturer, said that the courses have even helped to establish a full-featured bilingual medical team at the Department of Paediatrics.

Read what participants had to say about the week's programme:

A very nice opportunity to see another health care system and be exposed to different approaches. As there is a great genetic endocrinologist lab, there was more genetic-based information – that was the new aspect for me. And during the weekend we strolled the city, visited the picturesque Prague Castle – great time!

Dr. Konstantina Patouni,
Diabetes Centre, P&A Kyriakou Children’s Hospital, Athens, Greece

As I come from a small country and our health care system is not very developed, it was very useful to share experience with our international friends – even though I do adult endocrinology and not paediatric endocrinology. I got a tip to come and participate from a friend of mine who works here in the hospital.

Dr. Bariola Duro,
University Hospital Center Mother Theresa, Tirana, Albania

I was grateful to observe medical practice within a different culture and health care system. I was particularly interested to learn about the extensive use of genetics within the Endocrinology department. I’d like to thank the department for their warm welcome and approach to upskilling myself and the other practitioners that attended.

Dr. Emily Papadimos,
Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

The seminar is a great opportunity to review all the subjects, in Prague there are good doctors in this newly emerged and developing area.

Dr. Elbi Morta,
Santo Domingo,
Dominican Republic

I was mainly interested in the endocrinology genetic laboratory, as I have an intention to improve my service. My other goal was to get to know the paediatric endocrinology service, to see how they may differ from what we do in my country.

Dr. Cyntia Watanabe,
Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo, Brazil

The most important thing was getting to know different cultures of my colleagues, and of the local staff here in the hospital. I got to see how my colleagues deal with the disease in their country. Moreover, we’ve had a good time in the city!
