Summer Training – Internal Medicine

Scope of the summer internship of 4th year students of Internal Medicine

The two week summer internship takes place after completion of specified block classes and the conferring of credit.

  • Practical application of the knowledge of internal propaedeutics in examining patients and writing the medical history, making use of knowledge of cardiology, gastroenterology, hepatology, pulmology and metabolic diseases.
  • Work at the department under the guidance and supervision of an interne including the presentation of patients during the ward round.
  • Participation in emergency duty (once).
  • Practical skills training: application of s.c., i.m., i.v. by injection and infusion, venous blood collection.
  • Observation of the introduction of peripheral and central venous catheters, bladder catheterization, introduction of a stomach probe, gastrolavage and initiation of cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Independent performance of the chemical examination of urine, examination of stool for occult bleeding (Haemoccult) and the determination of glycaemia with a glucometer.
  • Participation in the recording of an ECG curve with the possibility of independent performance.
  • Attendance at diagnostic and therapeutic procedures: endoscopy (GIT), echocardiography, ergometry, sternal puncture, puncture of ascites, and possibly lumbar puncture.
  • Participation in X-ray rounds and seminars of the department.
  • Familiarization with the principles of performance of blood transfers – indication and administration, participation in the collection of blood samples and the practical performance of transfusion.

Completion of the holiday internship is to be confirmed by the employee responsible with his or her signature and workplace stamp in the Record Book of the student practitioner.

Record of the performance of the specified skills is to be made in the Index of Practical Skills of the student.
