At the 8th International Conference ADIT, the study dealing with insulin therapy in patients with Type II Diabetes in routine clinical practice supervised by Jan Brož, MD, was selected as the best presented scientific paper. It is a cross-sectional study describing the use of basal insulin in this indication in the Czech Republic. The study involved 137 centres with almost 1500 patients and its results showed that insulin doses are often not increased to the required levels and, therefore, the results of treatment, if it were the case, could be significantly improved.

Studies describing the reality of drug use in clinical practice are highly valued. While the so-called clinical studies, designed to demonstrate the efficacy and safety of the drug, are conducted under special conditions (e.g. a specific patient selection based on their ability to comply with the often complex program of the study, strictly timed visits, the exact protocol of patients' education, the possibility of telephone contact in the time between individual visits to the doctor, better educational means, more frequent blood glucose measurement etc.), the study revealing the reality of drug use in routine clinical practice which is often concealed, enables to detect possible errors and faults and to concentrate on their elimination, e.g. in the field of postgraduate education.

The International Conference ADIT (Advanced Diabetes and Insulin Treatment) is held annually in different countries throughout the world and its theme is the news in Diabetes Mellitus treatment with a special emphasis on insulin therapy. Almost 600 physicians participated in it this year. For more information see http://www.adit-conf.org.
