The prestigious Czech Society for Clinical Biochemistry Award for the Best Publication in Clinical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine Published in 2025 has been granted to MUDr. Julia Werle, MBA, a PhD student at the Department of Medical Chemistry and Clinical Biochemistry.
The award was formally presented during the Biolab 2026 professional meeting, held on 26 May 2026 in Olomouc. The selection was carried out by a committee appointed by the ČSKB board, which evaluated the scientific merit, originality, and contribution of the published work to the advancement of clinical biochemistry and laboratory medicine.
The awarded paper, Characterization of Hemoglobin Variants by Capillary Electrophoresis, UV-Vis, and FTIR Spectroscopy, was produced by an international team of authors led by Julia Werle and published in 2025 in the journal Electrophoresis. The study focused on the detailed characterization of hemoglobin variants using a combination of capillary electrophoresis, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy.
The work represents a significant contribution to the laboratory diagnostics of hemoglobinopathies and demonstrates the potential of advanced analytical methods in the characterization and differentiation of structural hemoglobin variants. Combining multiple complementary technologies provides a more comprehensive view of the molecular properties of hemoglobin variants and contributes to improved diagnostic accuracy in laboratory practice.
The award also highlights the high level of research conducted at the Second Faculty of Medicine and confirms its strong position in laboratory medicine, clinical biochemistry, and the development of modern diagnostic methods.
The award was presented by MUDr. Pavel Malina, Ph.D., Scientific Secretary of ČSKB, and prof. RNDr. David Friedecký, Ph.D., who emphasized both the scientific quality of the study and its contribution to the future development of laboratory diagnostics during the ceremony.
